Understanding By Design (UbD)

Understanding by Design’s Framework, highlights the role of a teacher as a designer. This design helps to align curriculum, content and assessment with students learning outcomes and skills that you want them to learn.  Learning about this design during my coursework changed the foundation of my instruction. Below is a Solar System unit sample plan that I created by using Ubd process. During the planning stage, I consciously engaged myself in the three – stepped backward design process for every lesson. I have listed some of the objectives, assessment tasks and activities that led to the Solar System Unit plan.

Below are the links to research projects. Working on them made me aware of the wide achievement gaps and the need to cultivate a democratic environment where all student voices are heard.

In my classroom, my goal is to create an environment of friendship through a ‘buddy system. Students in my class will co-operate and guide one another to develop each other’s skills and knowledge. Classroom rules too will be established with the students by creating a list of agreements. This is the kind of solid partnership and democratic environment I learnt to cultivate through the different graduate courses at Pace.

Funds Of Knowledge Theory - Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Funds of Knowledge supports Culturally Responsive pedagogy. It embraces cultural differences and values what learners bring into the classroom. I build on this knowledge and skills they have through the everyday teaching practices and want to make my students feel empowered by their uniqueness.

The below illustration demonstrates how we brought in Italian culture into the classroom by cooking authentic dishes from scratch.
